This is part 3 of a 4 part blog series summarizing key findings from the recently published research report “2022 State of Multilingual Collaboration”. The study was completed by Dimensional Research with 203 marketing and sales professionals who manage meetings and events for companies with more than 500 employees. The focus was on how translation and interpretation is used to help improve the experience and outcomes for multilingual meetings and events.

Only 33% regularly offer interpretation despite the increased number of multi-language attendees and high level of familiarity using interpretation.

The major reasons for not offering interpretation fall into three categories:

  1. Complexity
Finding translators and managing translation equipment both were at the top of the list with 40% and 39% of respondents respectively listing these inhibitors. This was followed closely by the extra challenge created when companies have to deal with multiple languages at the same event (37%).
  2. Apathy
Another top reason cited was the belief that participants can speak English “good enough” or elect “not to attend the event” (40%). Since most employees and partners usually don’t have the choice to opt out of a meeting or event, this will often lead to reduced engagement and inclusivity. For customer events, the companies and associations sponsoring the event risk missing a great opportunity to expand their audience by being more language inclusive.
  3. Cost and Quality
While cost and translation quality were also cited, they were significantly lower at 26% and 23% respectively.
