Challenge: Connecting a Global Audience Across Languages

The European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) Annual Congress is a leading global event in implant dentistry, gathering 4,000 – 5,000 top clinicians, researchers, and industry experts. Organized by the EAO, it provides a dynamic platform to advance education, foster collaboration, and share the latest scientific and clinical updates.

The congress draws a diverse audience from over 80 countries, including surgeons, researchers, and educators from Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond. This wide representation highlights the truly global and multicultural nature of the implant dentistry community.

Held in a different country in Europe each year, the EAO Congress features a multilingual environment with participants speaking English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, and more. Previously relying on costly single-language interpreters, the EAO needed a scalable, inclusive solution to overcome language barriers and improve real-time communication for all attendees.

Solution: Global Inclusion Through Live Translation

To address the multilingual challenges of its diverse audience, the EAO collaborated with Wordly to provide real-time AI translation for its 2023 EAO–DGI joint meeting in Berlin. Prior to the event, EAO committee members from various countries tested Wordly using their native languages to ensure its effectiveness. Following successful trials, EAO implemented Wordly AI translation to provide real-time interpretation in 25 languages across all sessions.

To support a smooth rollout during its first use of Wordly, EAO paired the AI translation platform with two professional interpreters in the plenary room. This allowed the local audience to benefit from familiar live interpretation while Wordly provided real-time translation in 25 languages for a broader global audience.

The combined approach helped build confidence in the conference translation technology and ensured that all attendees could engage fully with presentations and discussions. The integration of Wordly marked a significant step toward greater inclusivity and knowledge sharing during future EAO Congresses.

"We tested Wordly in multiple languages before the event, and the results were very promising,” said Vincent Laudun, EAO Congress Manager. “Pairing it with live interpreters for our first rollout gave us confidence and ensured a smooth experience for everyone."

Results: High Engagement and Multilingual Access

The implementation of Wordly at the 2023 EAO-DGI joint meeting in Berlin was a resounding success. Delegates from around the world were able to access live translation in their preferred language, making sessions more accessible and engaging for all attendees. The platform was easy to use, with no downloads or special equipment needed. Participants used their own devices to access translations by simply scanning a QR code at the entrance of the rooms.

Encouraged by the positive feedback, EAO continued using Wordly at its 2024 Congress in Milan. The consistent performance and seamless integration of the AI captioning and translation tool made it a reliable solution for the organization’s growing multilingual needs. One of the key features that contributed to its success was the Wordly customizable glossary. This allowed the EAO team to input industry-specific terminology, such as terms and acronyms related to implant dentistry and osseointegration. This ensured accurate and contextually appropriate translations across all sessions.

Usage data from the 2023 Berlin Congress highlighted strong engagement with the translation tool. Over the three days of the event, more than 2,600 participants, including 713 Chinese delegates, used Wordly. Other languages included Turkish, German, Japanese, and Korean. This demonstrated the real demand for multilingual access and validated Wordly as a scalable, inclusive solution that enhanced the congress experience for EAO’s global audience.

"Being able to offer real-time translation in so many languages was a game-changer,” added Laudun. “It significantly improved the experience for our global attendees."

Future: Full Integration at the 2025 Monaco Congress and Beyond

Building on the success of previous congresses, the EAO will fully implement Wordly at the 2025 EAO-SFPIO joint meeting in Monaco. The congress will offer simultaneous interpretation in 60+ languages across all sessions, accessible via attendees' personal devices.

"After two successful congresses with Wordly, we’re fully integrating it into the 2025 event in Monaco,” Laudun said. “It’s become a key part of how we deliver a more inclusive and globally accessible experience."

This comprehensive integration underscores EAO's commitment to inclusive and effective communication. By leveraging Wordly's customizable glossary feature, the organization ensures accurate translation of specialized terms related to implant dentistry and osseointegration. This approach not only enhances the experience for a diverse, multilingual audience but also sets a precedent for future events.

Looking ahead, EAO plans to continue utilizing Wordly AI translation technology in its forthcoming congresses, reinforcing its dedication to bridging language barriers and fostering global collaboration in the field of implant dentistry.
