Language interpretation is the process of managing the oral or voice communication from one source language into one or more output languages. The interpretation could be done simultaneously (in real-time) or consecutively (having the presenter pause at intervals to allow for interpretation over the same audio channel) - and could be either an exact translation or an approximate translation of the original content. The terms “interpretation” and “translation” are sometimes used interchangeably even though they actually have different meanings. Interpretation typically refers to spoken language while translation refers to written text.
Most organizations are global with a wide range of multilingual constituents, including employees, customers, partners, vendors, members, and citizens. This creates a big communication challenge since the language spoken at meetings and events is often not the preferred language for the audience - leading to lower productivity, higher costs, lack of inclusion, and reduced participation. Offering language interpretation at meetings and events enables both speakers and participants to participate in their preferred languages which increases engagement, learning, and participation. Language inclusivity is another benefit of offering simultaneous interpretation at meetings and events.
The presenter selects the language they will speak in - and the participants select the language they would like to listen or read in. The translation is managed in real-time by the Wordly Platform.
The Wordly Platform and translation app are designed to make meetings, webinars, conferences, and training sessions more productive and inclusive by enabling participants to listen or read along in real-time in the language they prefer. Wordly is available via the cloud for live, hybrid and on-site meetings.
When you are evaluating interpretation quality, there are 6 important considerations.
Comprehensive In-House Testing
Wordly invests significant resources to ensure you will receive high quality interpretation and subtitle output for every language we offer. Before we release a new language, we run simulated tests using audio conversations in the source language and verify both the audio and text outputs exceed an accuracy threshold.
Comprehensive Customer Testing
Many of our customers have conducted extensive tests versus human interpreters, Google Translate, and features built into video platforms. The feedback consistently comes back that not only is the quality of Wordly interpretation higher, but the user experience is significantly better.
Consistent Output
One of the advantages of machine based AI interpretation is the consistency of the output. While many human interpreters deliver high quality translations, the output can often have variable quality levels based on the individual interpreter.
Custom Glossaries
AI interpretation offers the ability to create a custom glossary with thousands of terms unique to your company or industry to further enhance the quality of the output and user experience. Most human interpreters are unable to keep track of large custom glossary lists.
Robust Technology Infrastructure
Wordly is built on state of the art SaaS technologies and has delivered over hundreds of millions of minutes of interpretation since we launched in 2019. We continuously monitor interpretation output and session feedback in order to improve our processes.
Customer Service
A Wordly Customer Success Manager, a real person versus an automated bot, is assigned to every new customer to ensure you have a great onboarding experience - helping you address any setup questions and being available for real-time help during your event.
There are three primary options for addressing the language barrier at meetings and events.
1. Do Nothing
The most common solution is to do nothing. While this is the cheapest and least time consuming option in the short term, there are significant long term costs when attendees are unable to understand meetings and do not attend or fully engage.
2. Use Human Translators
Human translators have been used for years and are a common option for meetings and events around the world. Human interpretation is a good option for large, complex events which are planned months in advance and supported by large budgets and teams to coordinate all of the logistics. But the time and cost of offering human interpretation often makes this option not viable for most organizations.
3. Use Live AI Translation and Captioning
A fast-growing option is AI translation. These tech solutions are powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and hosted in a secure cloud infrastructure, removing the need for human interpreters and special equipment. AI translation is being implemented across a wide range of government meetings.
